In this we learnt about Pecha Kucha and we also learnt about Kelvins.
Kelvins (Rough estimates)
- Candle - 1500 Kelvins
- Lightbulb - 3200 Kelvins
- Sunlight - 5500 Kelvins
- H.M.I - 6000 Kelvins
I have found a temperature gage for kelvins whilst doing a Google search of colour temperatures.

20/20 Slideshow Presentation
Slide 1 – This slide was a basic first slide that welcomed people to my presentation about different lighting techniques and how you would see examples of my work and other artist’s work.
Slide 2- My first image was one that I used with tungsten lighting and how it was originally meant to be shining directly onto the flower because of the way it was being photographed. This image had the flare affect which in the end I decided to keep.
Slide 3 - The two images that are on this slide where from before and after my shoot. It took about 45 minutes to actually get my lighting for this mage right with a flashlight and a continuous light on the background.
Slide 4 – For this image I used a soft box with a flashlight to illuminate the background and let the object stand out.
Slide 5 – This image took a couple of shoots before I got the lighting right. For this image I used a Tungsten light that was shining onto the object from above.
Slide 6 – For this image I used a Tungsten light that was shining straight onto the object and had a light on quite a high brightness so that the shadow stood out.
Slide 7 – This is one of my image that I took in a previous week using natural light that was coming in through a big window.
Slide 8 – This is another photograph from a previous week that was taken using a tungsten light, which gave the background effect and the shadows.
Slide 10 – This image was taken in a previous week I used flash with this light to create a really bright effect on the object because the light reflected off the side of the box that the object was placed in.
Slide 11 – This is an image that I found off the Internet where it looks like flash lighting had been used.
Slide 12 – This is another slide in which has an example of flash lighting that looks to be set up differently. Again it was an image that was found on the Internet.
Slide 13 – This image was found on an Internet search and it is an example of fluorescent lighting. This looks like a light box or a light has been placed behind the leaves and is just a continuous source that makes the lights see through.
Slide 14 – On this slide it is an example of natural lighting. The image that I found was off yet again an Internet search. The effect that it creates onto the objects is good because it is just like natural lighting on the specific object.
Slide 15 – This slide is an example of tungsten lighting and was found off an Internet search. This object looks good with just having tungsten lighting because of the way that it creates the reflection. Also the surface that the object was on helped the lighting because of these reflections.
Slide 16 – This is an example of flare lighting which is a type of lighting that I like because sometimes you can get a nice effect even though it isn’t original lighting. I also like the fact that you can see just the object in this case a branch as a dark outline.
Slide 17– This is a piece of work by Robert Mapplethorpe. The work that he creates is on of my favorites. The way that this image is just so simple and has a simple lighting set up that just concentrates on the flower.
The picture style is important to the lighting that you may use. Also you should use neutral, daylight, white balance. When you use a flash head When you use a flash head your white balance should be on the tungsten setting and on daylight setting for when the flash head is really brightly lit.

“Different Lighting”
Copy Lighting
Copy lighting although wise known as 45/45 lighting set up means that the angle of the light head is at 45 degrees from the camera.
For Pack shots –
Bland Lighting Blander Lighting
When continuous light is used then you should begin with an ISO of around 400.
Spectacular Highlight
This is when you point a light source at something reflective to get a very bright point of light. The setup is better used for liquid, glass and other objects like that. Black card is used at the sides to work as a reflector.
Light that shines through the subject it begins to give the image form.
Black card is used to allow for better definition than a white bag as it will give the subject black lines.
The top light is angled at 45 degrees. The rest of the setup is the same as before.
The top light that is used allows for the highlight on dark, coloured/ plain lid of a perfume bottle.
For A Darker Bottle
When the light is closer to the subject but still angled at 45 degrees .
The higher the light is to the subject it will really light the subject better.
Reflective Surface
This set up is the same set up as the spectacular highlight diagram with a few changes. For example there is only one piece of black card to create the line of depth. The light underneath the surface is angled towards the back of the subject as well.

My 6 images
For my historical object I decided to photograph a book that was found whilst cleaning up at my grandparents’ house. The book is roughly dated back to 100 years ago.
To photograph this object I placed it on a wood surface and used candles and a lamp at the side of the book and shot straight on looking at the spine of the book and also from various angles above the book so that there were varied views and different angles of the object.
Highly reflective object
For my highly reflective object I used a Christmas decoration that consisted of a glass dome around a bird on a white dome. When I photographed this object the lighting that I was using was hard and the reflections that it was giving off the glass were very bright. After playing around with the light and moving the light hood around and the shutters on the hood to different places the lighting finally turned out okay. This could be better if the whole of the background was black but my final image turned out with some of the background looking a bit brown.
Close up and macro object
The object that I started to use for my macro/ close up shot was an owl watch on a necklace. To create this image I decided to hook the necklace onto a poll and had it dangling in front of the camera lens. Whilst trying this I used different backgrounds to try and create a effect in which I wanted. If I had kept it as just a plain white polystyrene background then the texture in the background would have made the mage look a bit tacky. However I then used a piece of canvas and put that behind to create a better effect that made the image look the best it does.
Sara Dobson -"Thoroughly enjoyed being a hand model for the poker mini set build. Emma showed great vision and aspiration towards achieving her goal. It was inspiring to see her so enthused about the topic and vision she started with and the outcome.
It was brilliant to see Emma experimenting with different shots at different angles."
For my mini set build I decided to do something different than either a little character or toys and do a casino set build. After taking over 300 images at various angles and various set ups I finally got a image that I thought would fit this perfectly this was one of the hand in the image but because of the long exposure setting and my model moving her hand away it allowed you to be able to in a way see through the hand to the poker chips that it had behind the hand before it was moved.

Commercial product object
For my commercial product I used a Jean Paul Gautier perfume bottle. I choose this because of the way the light showed the colour of the perfume that was left in the bottom of the bottle and the perfume marks on the inside of the bottle after it has just been sprayed. Also because of the lighting that I used it looked good because of the arch that the light gave off on the back of the image.
For this final image I have used one that was taken whilst creating examples of different light. This is my example of natural lighting and is one of my favourites because of the way the natural light makes the colours in the bottle and because of the surreal look it gives in the bottle. Another favourite part of this image is the colours that are used being a dark blue against the glass and the floor in the background.
